O2 Simplicity… Could be simpler…

As you may or may not be aware, I recently purchased an iPhone 3G and currently have it on an O2 Pay As You Go Text Anytime tariff. It’s a good tariff, but I can’t access the web when I am away from a WiFi spot which is really annoying.

So, I decided I wanted to switch to a 1 Month O2 Simplicity contract tariff. This was £19.95 a month, for 600 UK voice minutes, 1200 texts and unlimited web browsing.

The thing is, I have only just got a new sim card and so I didn’t want to go through the trouble of switching over my number again, so I ditched the online order at the last minute as it said it was going to send out a new sim card.

I ended up calling O2 and going through the whole process again, only to find that there was no alternative to getting a new sim card. So I reluctantly agreed, at which point they asked me to provide them with:

  1. My debit card account number, sort code and card number
  2. My passport number
  3. My driving license number

After providing all of this information, they went away and came back and said that unfortunately they couldn’t process the order as I didn’t give them enough verification information… They suggested I opened another bank account, so that I could give them another debit card number?! How ridiculous!

I ended up telling them to cancel the order, only to have a text arrive later that afternoon telling me to call them about the order. At which point I did, and he wanted to continue the order and still continue to ask for more verification details which I continuously explained I did not have any more of. I eventually got that order completely cancelled, and I now plan on going to the actual O2 store to sort it out.
