Well it seems like forever since I last made a blog post here, for which I apologize! I have been extremely busy finishing off my assignments and I am now completely finished with education, woohoo!
Overall I feel my final year at University went great! I have not yet had my results back for semester two, but I managed to get some pretty awesome marks for semester one. My best being Web Development where I got 92% for the system I developed!
Semester two was a toughy. With the main bulk of implementation to do on my software engineering project (A replacement file explorer for Windows XP), a 2D game to create for the Advanced Programming for Computer Games module (See video below!) and more.
So with University over I am left thinking… “What next?”. Well, I have a fantastic holiday to look forward to on the 13th July – going away to Benalmadena in Spain for 3 weeks – which should be fantastic!
Meanwhile, I have been spending a fair amount of time learning even more C++ and some 3D game engines such as OGRE 3D. Web development is also on my list of things to keep up, so perhaps expect to see some additions to http://tdy.me
A final note for those of you who follow me on Twitter (if you’re not, why the hell not?! Click here and hurry up!) I apologize for the lack of activity of late. Now that I have time again, I will get my act together and get the tweets rollin’!
So until next time!

Hi Tom. First of all congrats on your final year, sounds like you are coasting.
As an online content manager and seo copywriter, I wondered if you would recommend I do a part time web development course? Would a part time course give me the necessary skills to offer a complete service, ie development, content and seo?
What’s your thoughts?
Thanks for stopping by the blog!
Doing a part time development course would certainly give you the qualification. Though I tend to disagree that any course can give you the necessary skills for anything computer related now days, due to the fast-paced nature and evolution of technologies. It would certainly give you a good foundation though.
Personally, I have learned almost everything from online tutorials and documentation. College and University to me were simply about being able to demonstrate and put into practice the skills and techniques I have been teaching myself since I was a child.
But, on the other hand, it depends entirely upon your learning style. I myself find reading and practical implementations my perfect learning style, you may be different. In which case, a part time course may be perfect for you. Of course, if you also NEED an actual qualification for business purposes then go for it!
One thing I will say about teaching yourself through online tutorials etc is that they tend to assume you already know something about the subject area. So if you are completely unfamiliar with web development, definitely go with the course.
I have rambled on a bit here, I apologize! But I hope this helps
Hi Tom
Thanks a lot for taking the time to give me such a comprehensive reply.
I would be approaching development from a ground zero position, so I guess a course would be the answer.
In saying that, I was genuinely surprised to learn that you recommend online tutorials. Out of interest can you recommend one?
Thanks again.
Have a good vacation ! Are you planning to join a full time job now? I know you have some good online projects but will they be good for making a living?
You must be feeling great..I feel like heaven when my exams get over..Well I’m a game lover and i do enjoy them a lot..I was searching from many days for some new games and i found your this blog..I’m so excited to see it and your game is too good..How can I have more such games??????
Hi there, just browsing around and saw this post. Congrats on completing your final year, have fun on your trip to Spain, and good luck on your future endeavors!
Nice one mate! I remember when i finished, what a relief that was, think we all spent the following week in the pub waiting for the summer ball! Good old times…! Good luck with the job.
If you can then go freelance or self employed. Don’t join a company unless its very, very good. It’ll crush all your creativity, ideas and soul.
I’m not bitter about my job – much.
Congrats and I hope your holiday went well. The current economic climate means a lot of graduates are finding it hard to persue the career they have studied for so I hope you find a position where you can put your hard learned skills to good use…You never stop learning though no matter how old you are LOL
Hi Tom! It’s Amiethest from eXceem. I didn’t know that you were done at Uni? Either way, I know how hard it is to get a 92 so well done.
You don’t mind if I drop a few anchor Freebiejeebies comments on here do you?
It’s kinda late but congratulations!!!
By the way, I’m sure you are not completely finished with education.
You’re still young and a lot of things still out there for you to learn about…which is pretty much true for all of us.
Thanks for all the comments, sorry I haven’t been able to get back to you all personally. As you can imagine I have been fairly busy job hunting and such.
I actually have an interview this afternoon, so fingers crossed something good will come of it!
Man, I wish I went on vacation after I graduated before I started working, but I was so excited about making money that I took a job offer right after graduation day…I sort of regret it.
Congrats on finishing your education, and I hope you get that job your after.
It’s always feels good to get good marks in semesters. Getting 92% for Web Development in Semester 1 are awesome marks. Congratulations on finishing your education.
Thanks Neda!
Congratulations on the graduation there are so many things to do in life outside of school.
It’s a good idea to go for a vacation after the education is over. Congratulations on completing your education.
You don’t want to continue your education to the next level? Congrats on graduation by the way!
I would like to congratulate you as your education is over. I feel making ‘replacement file explorer’ in your second semester must be a difficult task. Good luck for the future.
Hi Kai,
It’s not that I don’t want to continue with my education. I actually had lined up a position on a Masters Degree in Game Programming, but funds did not permit unfortunately, and so I have now gone into full time work.
Maybe at some point in the future I will pursue that path.
I’m sure you are not completely finished with education. You’re still young and a lot of things still out there for you to learn about. Nice post!
